Before We Began
Jenn Lim, CEO of Delivering Happiness (DH), wanted to write a book about everything she has learned delivering happiness for ten years following the mega best-selling book, Delivering Happiness, which she helped Tony Hseih to bring to life. An accomplished keynote speaker, the author of the Zappos’ Culture Book, and a thought leader in the business world, Jenn had a treasure trove of ideas — and nothing on the page.
We developed a book proposal based on the DH philosophy, and Jenn sold it to Hachette in a significant deal. She then hired me to coach her through the completion of the book.
While We Were Working
We began working on the book itself in March 2020 and finished the project in March 2021. It was obviously a very difficult year in the world, and a difficult time to write a book, as the business landscape kept shifting right under Jenn’s feet — then things got especially difficult in November when Tony died.
Jenn has climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro, and she often compared this trek to that one.
We also landed on the metaphor of a train to talk about narrative drive, and often referred to riding the train, chugging down the tracks, going off the rails, etc.
These are some slides used to share the trek with the DH team.
And collaborated with some of the business world’s biggest names to get the word out.
What’s The Big Idea?
The future of work is now, and companies that want to survive and thrive must invite every employee to bring their whole self to work. A strong company culture that can pivot in tough times is one where every person is seen and valued, and every person knows their purpose.
