Create a Stellar Book Proposal
I divide the work of developing a killer book proposal into four parts. Each is a separate package, designed for a specific part of the process and completed in order.
Step 1: What’s Your Big Idea? Nail It Now Session
Get clarity on your idea and confidence you have what it takes to write a great book.
You either have a book idea worth investing in — or you don’t.
In my Nail It Now session, you’ll answer questions about your motivation, your goals, and your book idea, and you’ll share some pages of your work. I will give you a clear understanding of your project’s viability in the marketplace and the steps you need to take to get there. You’ll come away with the confidence you need to move forward or the clarity you need to walk away.
If I don’t think your idea will be commercially viable, I will tell you, give you evidence for my evaluation, and do it all with compassion. It’s called tough love and for me, it’s not just a catchy phrase: It’s how I do business. If you are looking for someone to blindly tell you that your work is great, I’m not the coach for you.
No one has a crystal ball, but I have spent 30+ years in the publishing industry and I have a stellar track record of success. You can read some of my client success stories HERE.
The What’s Your Big Idea? Nail It Now Session is $6,500. Before we book it, I want to make sure I can add value to your project and I want you to be equally sure about me. What Comes After the What’s Your Big Idea? Nail It Now Session
If you choose to complete all four steps of my Killer Book Proposal Package, which takes you all the way through agent pitching with high-touch customized feedback and relentless support, it takes at least six months. You don’t have to do all four steps, but whatever steps you do choose to do must be done in order.
Step 2: The Whole Book Deep Dive
Pin your idea to the page.
If your idea is commercially viable, you will be invited into the next steps of my four-part process.
Roll up your sleeves and spend four intensive weeks pinning your idea to the page. We’ll work on every element of the proposal, honing, shaping, and doing the heavy lifting of laying a solid foundation for the book.
At the end of the Whole Book Deep Dive you will have:
An end to the overwhelm of wondering how to capture your idea on the page
Total clarity about what you are writing — and why
Confidence in your ability to be an industry thought leader
A clear sense of your unique message and voice
An understanding of the book publishing process and your best path through it
A draft of a book proposal that includes:
An Overview of your book idea so you know how to sell it
A Table of Contents so you know exactly what’s in it
An Author Bio that argues why you are the best person to write it
An Audience Analysis that proves who is going to buy it
A list of Comp Titles that pinpoints your competition
A Marketing Plan that highlights how you will get it into readers’ hands
An outline of the Sample Chapters you will write in Step 3 to showcase your work
The Whole Book Deep Dive is $14,000. It follows the What’s Your Big Idea? Nail It Now Session and I only invite writers to do this work with me if I believe their work is commercially viable. It is a four-week package of intense back-and-forth conversation and editorial work.
Step 3: The Pitch Perfect Proposal Package
Polish every element of your book proposal
Develop a complete book proposal that you can be proud to send to agents, with sample chapters that prove you can pull off what you are promising. A pitch-perfect proposal presents a compelling business case for your book. It is properly formatted, showcases your expertise, highlights your voice and approach to the material, proves you understand the marketplace and will give you the confidence to show your book proposal to the best agents in the business.
For this package, I bring in other book coaches to help with line editing and proofreading. I manage, oversee, and pay these experts, and give the final sign-off on your document.
The Pitch Perfect Proposal Package is $10,500. It follows the Whole Book Deep Dive and takes six weeks to complete, which includes time for copyediting, proofreading, and my final read-through.
Step 4 : Ready, Set, Pitch
Pitch from a place of strength.
Get strategic support through every step of the pitch process so you have the best possible chance of success. The Ready, Set, Pitch Package is $7,500 + $200/month for 5 months.*
My team and I will build you a customized list of agents who are open to queries, who represent the kind of book you are writing, and who we believe may have an affinity for what you are writing. We will help you prepare your pitch materials, including a great query letter, and we will help you design a pitch strategy that will work best for you and your situation.
This package includes a self-paced course with 18 videos and lessons that demystify the pitch process. It includes downloadable cheat sheets for what to ask an agent who calls you, what to look for in their contract, how to manage multiple offers, and more.
NOTE: There is no guarantee that you will get an offer of representation. Luck and timing play too big a role in the outcome for there to be any guarantee. What I can guarantee is that you will know without a doubt that you are putting forward a proposal that accurately reflects your idea and your expertise.
The Ready, Set, Pitch Package is $7,500 + $200/month for 5 months.*
* Whenever you land an agent, you stop paying the monthly fee.
