The Book Startup was designed for writers who feel GREAT (or at least pretty good) about their idea but NERVOUS about the book writing process. 

  • And YES that means writers who have not written a single word about their great idea.
  • It means writers who have blogged about their idea for years but never dared do anything more.
  • It means writers who have started and stopped more times than they can count (and they have the drafts to prove it!)

will give you an action plan so that you know exactly what to do next to start writing, and keep writing, until you get to "the end."

 


NUTS & BOLTS OF THE PROGRAM

 

  • Course fee is $375.00
  • Once you pay, we will reserve your spot for you. 
  • Only 30 spots available.
  • Lessons and assignments are released one per week for six weeks. You should plan on them taking you somewhere around 2-3 hours to complete.
  • You'll get an online workbook where you can keep all your assignments, revise them, refer back to them – and send them to your editor for review.
  • Each week, you'll send your assignments in for review, either on Tuesday or Wednesday. You and your editor will figure out which day work best for your schedules. After you submit, you'll receive detailed notes and a summary within 72 hours.
  • You can join the class Facebook group to meet other writers and ask questions. Jennie will jump in to answer as she is able.
  • During the course, there will be two Office Hour calls with Jennie, plus a special guest in Week 6.
    • The Office Hour calls will be recorded, so if you can't make the call, you can send in your questions ahead of time and hear her reply on the call. The recording will be sent out after the call is over.

 


WHAT YOU'LL LEARN EACH WEEK

 

WEEK 1: Why write this book?

  • Why are you writing this book? What is your motivation? Asking these questions is a powerful first step.
  • What is your point? We'll capture it on paper so you'll have something to guide you.
  • What working title are you going to use while you write?
  • Submit your work to your editor

 

WEEK 2: What is your structure?

  • Where does the story start – and why?
  • Where does it end – and why?
  • Where do you (the narrator) stand in time?
  • What are you willing to leav out? What is the time frame of the story?
  • Building the spine of your story 
  • Submit your work to your editor

WEEK 3: Giving yourself permission to tell your story

  • The importance of the writer's intention
  • Who can you turn to for support as you write? 
  • Who should you avoid as you write?
  • What is holding you back from finishing?
  • The laws and legalities of memoir
  • When can you commit to finishing a rough draft?
  • Submit your work to your editor

 

week 4: WRITING YOUR FIRST CHAPTER

  • Is your voice and tone suitable for the story?
  • Is the story on the page?
  • Are you hooking your reader from the very first sentence?
  • Nail down these things from the start and you'll have a template for writing the entire rest of the book.
  • Submit your work to your editor

WEEK 5: Writing your Last Chapter

  • What are you aiming for in your narrative arc?
  • Have you identified a satisfying conclusion?
  • Nail down the conclusion right away and you'll have a clear target to aim towards as you write.
  • Submit your work to your editor

 

WEEK 6: DEVELOPING YOUR AUTHOR PLATFORM

  • Who is your ideal reader? 
  • Where can you connect with your ideal reader?
  • How can you connect in a way that is authentic to you?
  • What is your competition?
  • What can you do NOW to lay the groundwork for success?
  • Submit your work to your editor
  • SPECIAL GUEST
