One on One Coaching

I WILL TAKE YOUR HAND AND LEAD YOU FROM VAGUE IDEA TO SOLID, EXECUTABLE BOOK PLAN IN SIX WEEKS.

This is my highest value service. It can literally save you years of frustration that comes from writing blind. It is equally effective for fiction and non-fiction writers, for flat-out beginners to New York Times bestsellers. But you have to be ready to dig deep and work hard.  You have to be ready for some serious tough love. You have to be ready to invest and you have to be ready to make more progress than you have ever made before.

Every element we develop together in this program will also lead directly to what you will need when it comes time to prepare a book proposal for agents or to build a marketing plan for reaching readers if you self publish, so it's like double dipping in terms of your preparation and planning.

Note that I don't take on every writer who approaches me for this service. I have to believe it can really help you. You have to believe it can really help you. We have to know that we can do awesome work together. The first step it to email me to let me know you're interested. I'll send a Q&A and a rate sheet and we'll go from there.

Here's what SOME OF my clients have to say:

"It's possible I could have eventually figured this out on my own, but working with you is like getting a Fastpass to the front of the line."  —Lisa Manterfield, author of I'm Taking My Eggs and Going Home

"I owe it to you....you really are great at not just the writing but the marketing and figuring out all that stuff before you write."  — Paolina Milana, The S Word

"YOU DID IT! My book just sold- again! But it's all thanks to YOU! Thank you for being the best book proposal/author coach EVER!!  — Monica Holloway author of  the bestselling Cowboy and Wills, and Driving With Dead People.

"You are not a book coach, you are a life changer.  You are the wind beneath my wings. I fear for us if we ever end up in a karaoke bar together." —Tracey Cleantis, author of The Next Happy

WHO IS THIS PROGRAM FOR?

  • Writers who are ready to commit to working hard and digging deep.
  • Writers who have the TIME to give to this work.
  • Writers who are ready to invest in their success.
  • Writers who are open to creative input -- who won't, in other words,  defend every thought they've already had.
  • Entrepreneurs and other experts who aren’t even sure they ARE writers, but who are certain they have a killer idea the world is waiting for.
  • Writers who are not necessarily at the start of their book writing process but who may stuck and want a way forward.

WHO MAY NOT GET WHAT THEY NEED?

  • Writers who might be better served by a therapist. Writing is deep, soul-level work. My clients and I cry all the time together. We rant at the world. We solve big problems. But it’s not therapy.
  • Writers who want to get rich quick or who need some kind of guarantee. Writing is a creative process, and working with a coach is an investment in yourself. There are no guarantees in publishing.
  • Writers who want to get this over with fast. It's not fast.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF ONE TO ONE COACHING?

  • Writers come to me all the time who are frustrated because they can't land an agent, can't attract readers, and can't seem to make any headway in their career. In almost every single case, their problems would have been solved by doing the work included in the Book Startup package. When I say that it can save years of frustration, that is not an exaggeration. I have seen it happen time and time again.
  • You will get 100% focused attention on your work -- no waiting for feedback, no having to read other student's work. This is a personalized service, designed for fit you and your project. I have a system I follow, but at every turn, it is customized to work for you. Think of it like getting a suit tailored to fit you exactly right. Same principle here.
  • When you sign up to be coached by me you get my full brain, all the time -- which is to say that I will solve problems for you in the middle of the night, in the middle of a shower, and in the middle of the 405 Freeway; I will come across books, articles, blogs, and ideas that I will send your way as you work; when you hit a roadblock  or get mired in doubt, I will feel the pain as keenly as you do, and will do everything I can to help you through it; and when things go well, I’ll be your loudest cheerleader.
  • My program is based on many years of service to writers. I know what works -- and even better, I know WHY it works. I can explain it to you, so that you understand the strategy.
  • You will feel clarity and lightness around your work, with brings great joy, and means you will not be as cranky around the people you love. They will appreciate this enormously.
  • You will be READY TO WRITE and EXCITED TO WRITE rather than overwhelmed and confused.
  • You will finally believe you can actually do it.

HOW DOES COACHING WORK?

WEEK 1:

  • We start with a 22-page Blueprint for a Book document, where I ask you a boatload of questions about your book idea and your writing life. (Details coming July 26th. This page is a work in progress.)
  • You do your research, contemplation, and writing. You will need one to two weeks to get this work done depending on how much time you have to devote to it. If you think you'll need more time, you can take it. The extra time you take doesn't count towards the six weeks. We just schedule Week 2 to start later.

WEEK 2:

  • You turn in your Blueprint and I go over it with a fine-toothed comb.
  • I send everything back to you with detailed comments, questions and assignments for the next week.
  • We get on the phone for 60 minutes to discuss my analysis and the assignments.
  • We decide together which parts you will revise -- and there will be parts you need to revise and refine. That's what this process it all about. Writing is an iterative process, but this time, your revisions will be guided by a pro. It's a potent combination that can really deepen your writing.

WEEK 3:

  • You turn in your revisions.
  • I send everything back to you with comments, questions and assignments for next week. In the third week, you will draft your first chapter. (If you are trying to rescue a book, not start one, this week you will be asked to revise your first chapter.)
  • We get on the phone for 60 minutes to discuss my analysis.

WEEK 4:

  • You turn in your assignments.
  • I send everything back to you with comments, questions and assignments for next week. In the fourth week, you will draft your last chapter. (If you are trying to rescue a book, not start one, this week you will be asked to revise your last chapter.)
  • We get on the phone for 60 minutes to discuss my analysis.

WEEK 5:

  • You turn in your assignments. In the fifth week, you will draft a full outline of your book -- but it's not a scary roman numeral outline. It's an outline that has magical powers. You'll see!
  • I send everything back to you with comments, questions and assignments for next week.
  • We get on the phone for 60 minutes to discuss my analysis.

WEEK 6:

  • You turn in final revisions to everything.
  • I go over it all and write my recommendation for next steps
  • We get on the phone for 60 minutes to discuss next steps -- which could be that you go off and write the book on your own; you jump into my Author Accelerator program to write under the guidance of one of my editorial team; you commit to working with me one-on-one while you write your book.

WANT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT HOW I COACH?

Read this Q&A I did about coaching with client Lisa Cron over at Writer Unboxed. Note that, despite the tagline about fiction, Lisa and I are talking about non-fiction. And yes, I coach both genres—and memoir, too.
