Your pitch and proposal (for nonfiction books) needs to knock the socks off everyone who reads it. Writing one requires you to start thinking like an entrepreneur with a product -- a transition that makes some writers uncomfortable. Fear not! I love this part of the process!

I've helped dozens of writers make successful pitches to top agents and I can help you, too.

 

This program is designed to give you the highest level of attention and feedback throughout the pitching process so you can have the best possible chance of landing an agent.  

All writers need to get their pitch materials in top shape and make a strategic plan for approaching the pitch process -- including when to pitch, who to pitch to, where to pitch (email, conference, contest?) and whether or not to pitch one at a time or in batches.

Writers of  nonfiction books and some memoir writers will also need a book proposal if they intend to submit their work to literary agencies. A proposal includes a summary/overview of the work, a detailed table of contents, an audience analysis, a competitive title analysis, a marketing plan, and an author bio. 

 

How does it work?

You get three to six weeks* of intensive feedback in three key ways

* Fiction writers normally take three weeks. Non-fiction writers take six because they need a comprehensive marketing plan.

 

1. EDITORIAL FEEDBACK ON THE PAGE   You will work through all the elements of your pitch, one piece at a time.  I will give you detailed editorial and strategic feedback on every single aspect of your work. Based on what I see, I will give you customized assignments for each of the next 5 deadlines, and on every deadline thereafter, you will get the same intensive on-the-page guidance and feedback. Be prepared to do a lot of thinking, a lot of digging, and a lot of research.

2. A CUSTOMIZED AGENT PITCH LIST  + PITCH STRATEGY  Don't guess about which agents might be best to pitch to, whom you should go out to first, and in what order. I'll make you a customized pitch list, help yuo guild a pitch strategy and make sure you are positioned to pitch with confidence.

3. SUPPORT BY EMAIL   If you have questions or doubt or confusion or angst between deadlines, I will almost always answer on the same business day. And if I have thoughts or ideas about your project, I will email, as well. When you sign up to be coached by me you get my full brain, all the time -- which is to say that I will brainstorm marketing ideas for you in the middle of the night, in the middle of a shower, and in the middle of the 405 Freeway; I will come across books, articles, blogs, and ideas that I will send your way as you work; when you hit a roadblock or get mired in doubt, I will feel the pain as keenly as you do, and will do everything I can to help you through it.

4. SUPPORT BY PHONE   After you get my feedback on each deadline's assignments, we will talk on the phone for an hour. We will brainstorm, plan, commiserate, strategize, and answer every question you have about the work. You will find that this process is rigorous, supportive, focused, and fun.

Who will not get what they need?

  • Writers who are rushing to pitch. If your manuscript is not edited and polished, the best pitch in the world isn't going to help you.
  • Writers who are interested in self publishing. You don't need an agent to self publish, so you don't need to pitch.
  • People who want someone else to do the hard work for them.
  • People who demand a guarantee as to outcome. There are no guarantees in the creative process or in publishing. 
  • People who are mean and rushed and stingy of spirit. I don’t work with people like that, because I find that they don’t write good books.
  • Writers who might be better served by a therapist. Writing is deep, soul-level work. My clients cry all the time. We rant at the world. We solve big problems. But it’s not therapy.

Okay so what does it cost to invest in my success?

$4,800.00 for nonfiction; $1,650 for fiction. Memoir may fall into either of the above two categories, depending on your story and your topic.

 

How exactly does it work, again?

It's three to six weeks of intense development work (depending on your genre)

 

  • 4 to 6 deadlines—You send me pages at a prescribed time, usually twice a month.
  • Professional, timely, line-by-line feedback— I pour over your pages line by line, making extensive notes, and giving you direction for what to do next.
  • Coaching calls—After each deadline, we'll check in and make sure everything is going according to plan, that you're feeling good about your work, and that the project is on track. We'll brainstorm, talk about problems, concerns, and killer marketing ideas. 
  • Customized project management— We decide together whether it makes sense to revise as you go, or plow forward with content generation. You can't go off track in this way. I won't let you.
  • Email me with clarifying questions —  I'll be here to answer big and small questions as they arise. It's like having a pro on speed dial.
  • You will end up with a pitch perfect pitch  — You will end up with a pitch package, including query, synopsis, annotated Table of Contents (when needed), agent pitch list, pitch plan, and for nonfiction, a proposal that includes audience analysis, competitive titles, and killer marketing plan.
  • Support while you pitch — I will support you as you send your first wave of pitches out. If you would like ongoing support while you keep pitching, there is an additional small monthly fee.

 

Who do I choose to work with?

I don't take on every writer who approaches me for this service. I have to believe it can really help you. You have to believe it can really help you. We have to know that we can do awesome work together. The first step is to fill out the application at the bottom of the page to let me know you're interested.  

I use five main criteria to make my decision:

1. Commercial Viability: I want to help writers who want to reach the maximum possible number of readers and there are some projects that are more likely to do that than others. I have a pretty good nose for that, by this point -- although that doesn't mean there are any guarantees in publishing. There are not. 

I2. Coach-ability:  Is the writer coachable? Are they ready, willing and able to accept guidance? Can they take what I have to offer? 

3. Fire in the Belly: Do they have a fire in their belly? Pitching a book is a long, hard, complex and emotionally difficult undertaking and everyone has demands on their time, doubt in their mind, and any number of other potential roadblocks to success. Persistence is far more important than talent, so I try to get a sense of why they are doing this, what they hope to get from it, and whether or not they have the resolve to see it through. 

4. Can they afford my fees? Publishing is a gamble. Working with a book coach is an investment that may or may not pay off. I couldn't work with someone who didn't understand that, or who was demanding some kind of monetary ROI. 

5. Will they make me a better writer, person or coach?  I am absolutely made better by working with my clients and I look forward to opening their submission emails every day. I love my work and I have many clients who have worked with me for many years -- we are now on second books and third books. I have become a better editor, a better coach, a better writer and a better person by my association with these people. I look for that possibility.

  5. If you think the feedback I give you on your project and your process aligns with your needs, and the timing works for your schedule, we can determine a time to start coaching. Note that I normally book clients for this program at least two and sometimes three or four months in advance.
  6. If you need a 30-minute phone call to make your decision on this investment, we can set up a time to talk.
  7. If I don't think you are ready to work with me on 1:1 on premium level pitch coaching, I will let you know why. It's not a judgment about you or your work. It's usually just a matter of who I can best help.
